Beyond The Obvious

Beyond the Obvious is a set of literary events hosted by Kanal, the socio-cultural platform of Jubilee. As it’s name suggests it is intended to inspire the participants to venture beyond what meets the eye, and challenges to writer in us to derive meaning from seemingly mundane elements.

Two literary events are conducted – Microtale and Describe the Scenario, and while the same participant may enter both, entries are restricted to one per person.

Deadline for submission: 4.00 pm September 20, 2023

Results shall be announced during the conclave at Mother Teresa Hall, JMMC&RI. 

There will be a registration fee of Rs.50/- for members for each event, and Rs. 80/- for both.

Submit your entries as a typed document in pdf format. Kindly ensure the upload is completed before the deadline.

MICROTALE

The trick to a good microtale is to enrapture the attention of the reader and weave a story in their minds, all in a few words! As it’s wisely said, less is always more when it comes to the art of storytelling.

First Place: Rs. 1000/-          Second Place: Rs. 750/-          Third Place: Rs. 500/-

Rules

1. Entries should be in English.

2. Entries should have only 20 words arranged in 3-4 sentences.

3. The entries will be judged based on creativity and adherence to the theme.

4. Theme will be provided 2 days prior to the date of submission.

 

DESCRIBE THE SCENARIO

Describe the scenario challenges all participants to gaze at the mundane and see the extraordinary. A picture shall be be circulated to all participants and the mind the blows us away with their interpretations wins the prize!

Rules

1. The picture provided should be interpreted and then described in the participant’s own perspective.

2. Entries should be in English.

3. Entries can be a poem, prose, or story.

4. There are no word limits.

5. The picture will be given 2 days prior to the date of submission.

6. Entries will be judged based on the language used and the novelty of the interpretation.
